Demerit Points System (Since 2023)

Every driver starts with 12 points per year:

  • Each offense deducts points as shown above
  • 0 points remaining = 90-day license suspension
  • Points reset after the suspension period
  • Check your remaining points via the DLT Smart Queue app

What This Means for Expats

If you hold a Thai driving license and lose all 12 points, your license is suspended for 90 days. You cannot drive during this period — doing so is an additional offense.

Late Payment Surcharge

If you don’t pay within 30 days of receiving a ticket:

Tips for Expats Driving in Thailand

  1. Get a Thai license — Even with an IDP, a Thai license is easier for traffic stops
  2. Carry your license always — No license = 1,000 THB fine on the spot
  3. Don’t bribe — It’s illegal for both parties; just pay the official fine
  4. Dashcam recommended — Helps dispute unfair tickets
  5. Know speed limits — 80-90 km/h on highways, 50-60 km/h in cities
  6. Helmet always on motorcycles — Strictly enforced, 500 THB fine
  7. Never drink and drive — Thailand has random checkpoints, especially weekends/holidays
