What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a number used to assess whether your weight is within a healthy range relative to your height. It's a screening tool recommended by the WHO for adults aged 18 and over.
BMI Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Example: 65 kg, 170 cm (1.70 m) → BMI = 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 22.5
BMI Categories (WHO Asia-Pacific)
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 – 22.9: Normal
- 23.0 – 24.9: Overweight
- 25.0 – 29.9: Obese Class I
- 30.0 and above: Obese Class II
Limitations of BMI
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle mass and fat. Athletes may have a high BMI without being overweight. It should be used alongside body fat percentage, waist circumference, and other health assessments.
